CRIJ 6319 Women, Law and Justice

The course will examine the socio-legal construction of gender, how laws affect and control individuals on the basis of the intersections of sex/gender, class and ethnicity/race/nationality, and how prejudice/discrimination/oppression has maintained a patriarchal system which subordinates/subjugates both women and people of color, via civil and criminal law. Issues related to women and gender: civil rights/citizenship/suffrage; reproductive health rights; prostitution; sexual harassment; rape; marriage, family and divorce; and lgbtq rights will be examined.
