Program of Study - Art History (MAIS)
The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) in Art History. Before admission to candidacy by the Art Department, applicants must have completed, or must complete as leveling work, eighteen hours of undergraduate upper division art history courses unless they have already earned a Master of Fine Arts degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution. Graduate art history majors are required to consult with the graduate art history advisor concerning coursework and schedules until admitted to candidacy. Candidates may elect a thesis option or a non- thesis option for this degree.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the graduate program, prospective candidates must first meet all requirements for graduate admission to UT Rio Grande Valley, as well as the other requirements listed below:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a recognized international equivalent with at least 18 hours of undergraduate upper division art history courses, unless applicant has already earned a Master of Fine Arts degree.
- Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester credit hours.
- Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources.
- Personal statement detailing professional goals and reasons for pursuing the graduate degree.
- Resume including educational background and work experience.
- GRE General Test. GRE test scores are valid for 5 years. A waiver of the GRE requirement will be granted to applicants who show proof of completing a graduate degree (master’s or doctoral).

- 18 hours in Discipline One (concentration area)
- 9 hours in Discipline Two
- 9 hours in Discipline Three
Capstone Requirement
Written Comprehensive Exam
