Interdisciplinary Studies with a Concentration in History (MAIS)
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the MAIS program in history, prospective candidates must first meet all requirements for graduate admission to UT Rio Grande Valley, as well as the other requirements listed below:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a recognized international equivalent with minimum of 12 hours of upper-division and 9 hours of lower-division History course work.
- Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester credit hours.
- GRE General Test. GRE test scores are valid for 5 years. A waiver of the GRE requirement will be granted to applicants who show proof of completing a graduate degree (master’s or doctoral).
- Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources.
- Letter of intent
- Writing sample of at least five pages with citations and bibliography

Program Requirements
Candidates may elect one of two options to complete the Master of Arts degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in history.
Choose one of the following options:
Thesis Option:
- 18 hours in Discipline One (concentration area)
- 6 hours in Discipline Two
- 6 hours in Discipline Three
Capstone Requirement (6 Credits)
Thesis
Non-Thesis Option:
- 18 hours in Discipline One (concentration area)
- 9 hours in Discipline Two
- 9 hours in Discipline Three
Capstone Requirement
Written Comprehensive Exam
