SURG 9545 Anatomic & Clinical Pathology UTRGV
The UTRGV SOM pathology course is a combined Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP) rotation provides fourth year students a broad experience in general diagnostic techniques. The course will be tailored to the student’s individual interests and the student will get exposure to sections such as cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, hematopathology, medical microbiology, molecular, pulmonary, surgical pathology, and transfusion medicine. The course will also include interdepartmental conferences and tumor board participation. The goals is for the students to understand the basic principles of diagnostic anatomic pathology and its role in clinical medicine. In diagnostic surgical pathology the student’s learning will emphasize the clinical and morphologic aspects of disease evident in the gross & microscopic presentations of specimens. They will also, see the intraoperative consultation services that pathologists provide to surgeons through frozen-section diagnosis. Students may have opportunities to participate in immunohistochemistry techniques, fine needle aspiration (FNA) and exfoliative Cytology while assigned to the surgical pathology section. The goals for clinical pathology are to learn appropriate usage and interpretation of clinical laboratory tests, and to gain a better understanding of the principles of and techniques required in laboratory medicine to help the student advance their application of the diagnostic tests to the clinical management of patients. In transfusion medicine students will focus on blood product testing and selection, identification of underlying antibodies, and transfusion reaction management. Students will gain exposure to flow cytometry techniques to understand the pathophysiology of disease as well as aid in diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring the clinical patient. This elective is appropriate for all students who will use laboratory and pathology tests in their careers and students interested in pathology as a career choice. At the end of this rotation the student will understand the role of the pathologist as a clinical diagnostician, consultant, researcher, and teacher as well as the ways in which pathology interfaces with other specialties in medicine.
