POLS 6340 Political Theory

Political Theory is an advanced survey of major concepts and debates in contemporary political science. It reviews the (1) Structural Foundations of Modern Politics, (2) Ideological Orientations to Modern Politics, and (3) Challenges to the Foundations of Modern Politics. The Structural Foundations of Modern Politics consists of four complex macro-institutions: capitalism, the state, the nation, and democracy. The modern world order has been conceptualized, legitimated, and criticized through a variety of competing ideologies, including liberalism, neo-liberalism, socialism, and communism. The macro-institutional foundations of modern politics are undergoing numerous transformations, including globalization, transnationalization, and the rise of populist and illiberal (even fascist) authoritarian movements and regimes. These challenges signal a potential breakdown of what was once considered the foundational institutions of the modern world order.
