Graduate Non-Degree-Seeking Student Admission
UNIVERSITY-WIDE REQUIREMENTS FOR NON-DEGREE-SEEKING STUDENTS
A graduate non-degree-seeking student is admitted to UTRGV for the purpose of enrolling in graduate coursework for professional improvement.
In order to be considered as a graduate non-degree-seeking student, an applicant must submit a graduate application along a nonrefundable application fee and meet the following criteria:
- Undergraduate GPA. Awarded a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or international equivalent and earned at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) GPA in the last 60 semester hours or the equivalent in quarter hours on the applicants bachelor’s degree transcript. OR Earned Graduate Degree. Earned a previous master’s degree or doctoral degree from an accredited university or international equivalent.
- English Proficiency. International applicants whose native language is not English must also submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). CONSIDERATIONS FOR NON-DEGREE SEEKING STUDENTS
- In order to be eligible to enroll in a graduate course, students must meet the necessary prerequisites, space must be available, and students must obtain the approval of the course instructor. Students who wish to take a graduate course in a discipline other than that for which they have been authorized upon admission must obtain the approval of the authorized representative (as defined above) of the discipline offering the course.
- A maximum of 6 semester credit hours earned as a non-degree-seeking student may be applied toward a graduate degree. If applicable, the credit will only be applied after the student has been admitted as a graduate degree-seeking student.
- Graduate non-degree-seeking students are not permitted to enrolled in accelerated online courses.
- When educator certification is involved, approval of the director of the College of Education and P-16 Integration Educator Preparation Office is required before the student enrolls to ensure that credit earned as a non-degree-seeking student can be applied to an educator certification program.
- To continue as a non-degree-seeking student in a subsequent semester, the student must meet the standards required to remain at UTRGV as indicated in the section on Graduate Academic Standing.
