ORTH 9501 Sub-Internship in Orthopedic Surgery

The orthopedic surgery sub-internship is designed to provide a broad exposure to clinical experiences that provide opportunities for 4th year medical students to actively participate in the medical and operative management of adult and pediatric orthopedic patients. During this rotation students will gain experience in the treatment of acute and chronic muscular-skeletal injuries. Students also gain exposure to treating both the common and complex disorders presenting to the orthopedic surgery office. They will be exposed to disorders of the hand and upper extremities, trauma, joint disorders, joint replacements, pediatric general and complex disorders. Orthopedic experiences are intended to improve students' clinical patient management skills in both conservative care and the appropriate progression to operative intervention. Students are expected to round on all inpatients when they have participated in their clinical care. Students are expected to round on their patients and present pertinent information to the attending physician. Locations for the Sub-Internship in Orthopedic Surgery course are across Hidalgo and Cameron counties.

Prerequisite: Completion of Surgery MS3 Clerkship.
