MUSI 1309 World Music Cultures

Introduces the study of music by asking fundamental questions about the origins, functions, and universal qualities of music in human society. Students learn how people worldwide use instruments, organize musical sound, and utilize music to enrich their experiences. Universal and unique aspects of music cultures will emerge through selected case studies from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Students will examine their personal musical values as part of the course process. 1st of 4 courses in Music History, Literature and Culture sequence for majors. No prerequisite. Meets the requirements for Language, Philosophy & Culture in the General Education Core.
