SOCW 2361 Introduction to Social Work
This course provides an overview of the social work profession, including its history, core values, ethical principles, and the variety of roles social workers play in practice settings and society. Students will explore key social work frameworks, such as person-in-environment, strengths-based, anti-racist and oppressive practice, and cultural humility, and gain an understanding of the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice. The course will cover the impact of social policies on individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities with emphasis on social justice, diversity, human rights, at local, state, national and global/international levels. Through case studies and discussions, students will develop critical thinking skills and develop an increased awareness of the social work profession and their various roles.
