Program Overview
Health informatics is an interprofessional field of study using healthcare data, information, and knowledge. Among the most common purposes served by health informatics professionals are facilitating better collaboration and coordination among healthcare providers, improving cost-efficiency in healthcare delivery, and increasing accuracy and efficiency in healthcare provision. Health informatics is often a behind-the-scenes profession, yet these healthcare professionals seek to improve care for each patient through the appropriate organization, storage, and management of healthcare data. In today's world of big data, healthcare systems and those who work with them have become essential. By using these systems, healthcare providers have easier access to patient information, which can help provide the healthcare team with better solutions, resulting in better patient outcomes. Health informaticians also communicate with policymakers and those in information technology, acting as a bridge between the two fields. Their unique skill set and knowledge of the health informatics profession make them an indispensable healthcare team member. The minor in Health Informatics is designed to enhance other degrees on which students work.
