BMEE 6362 Soft Tissue Biomechanics
This course will introduce students to the mechanics of soft biological tissue. In particular, the response of collagenous tissues found in various organs (e.g., eye, heart, joints, skin, etc.) to mechanical loads and large deformation will be studied. Advanced constitutive models of soft tissues will be adapted to describe unique bio-tissue characteristics such as nonlinear elasticity, viscoelasticity, and poroelasticity. Basic mechanical testing methods for soft tissue characterization and hierarchical and multi-scale structures of various soft tissues will also be introduced. Students will also be introduced to the computational modeling of soft tissues using the finite element method for a holistic understanding of soft tissue biomechanics.
