Department of Philosophy
The UTRGV Philosophy Department provides the core of a liberal arts education by teaching students to read carefully, think critically, write clearly, reason systematically, and wrestle with some of the most difficult and important questions of human existence such as God, morality, existential angst, the problem of knowledge and existence, and the degree to which religion and science explain the being and nature of the universe. We especially aim to encourage personal growth and to promote the betterment of our communities as well as the transformation of the world. Our department offers the general BA in Philosophy and the BA in Philosophy with a concentration in Pre-Law and well as minors in Philosophy and Religious Studies.
The Philosophy Department also provides an indispensable service to the General Education Core curriculum and many other programs and majors. Because philosophy empowers students to think critically, communicate clearly, and make decisions responsibly, philosophy is applicable to almost anything a person can do and thus powerfully equips students to succeed in any career, enterprise, field, or course of further study. Philosophy majors from UTRGV have gone on to enjoy successful careers in medicine, engineering, entrepreneurship, criminal justice, business, law, ministry, scientific research, art, publishing, sales, management, and public service.
