Expired Coursework

MASTER’S COURSEWORK – MAXIMUM PERIOD FOR COMPLETION

All academic coursework applied toward a Master’s degree must have been earned in the seven (7) years immediately preceding completion of the graduate program.

Petitions for Extension of the Maximum Period for Degree Completion
In exceptional circumstances, active continuously enrolled students may request a one-year extension of the Maximum Period for Degree Completion upon approval of the Program, Academic College, and Graduate College. A denial at any level stops the process. Students with an approved extension of the maximum period for degree completion are not required to submit course re-validations.

Petitions for Revalidation of Expired Coursework
In exceptional circumstances only, inactive students seeking to return to UTRGV for degree completion may reapply to UTRGV and upon admission, petition to include expired coursework in the degree.

A limit of 9 credit hours may be revalidated and reinstated in a 30-credit hour degree plan, and a limit of 12 credit hours may be revalidated and reinstated in 36-credit hour or greater degree plans, upon approval of the Program, Academic College, and Graduate College. A denial at any level stops the process.

Students must graduate within one (1) academic year of credit revalidation, and revalidation does not change the grade initially earned in the course.

Expired coursework will not be revalidated for the purpose of use in a second or subsequent degree and expired elective coursework will not be revalidated. In addition, transferred and/or substituted credits will not be revalidated.

Students seeking to revalidate expired coursework must meet with their Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) to discuss revalidation and to develop a degree plan/path to graduation.
