The PMSB 8505 module is a continuation of PMSB 8301,8303, and 8501. This module will present foot and ankle pathologies from a sports medicine standpoint. This module will discuss advanced surgical principles focused on the foot and ankle. Foot and ankle conditions discussed in PMSB 8505 will identify, explore, and correlate how the biomechanics, musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, and dermatological systems influence foot pathology and trauma as appropriate.
PMSB 8505 is presented cumulatively, complementing other module work in the pre-clinical curriculum. This knowledge base will serve as a basis to allow the student to integrate diagnostic and treatment decisions specific to a podiatric physician and foot and ankle surgeon. This module will be presented through case-based and didactic lectures, problem-based learning, group discussion, and self-learning. Clinical topics will incorporate etiology, epidemiology, natural history, risk factors, and clinical presentation, giving the student the skills to formulate a comprehensive, reasoned differential diagnosis. Diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests will also be introduced and discussed to help confirm a diagnosis, and the students will then learn how to synthesize and correlate their medical knowledge and develop and implement medical, surgical, and rehabilitative treatment protocols. Students are expected to engage verbally and in written form through active learning principles used in small group sessions and traditional lecture formats.
To best succeed, students must have the ability to engage in the complex critical thinking necessary to assimilate facts and reach conclusions regarding the diagnosis and treatment of the foot and ankle from an evidenced-based perspective.

Your instructors will help you develop your communication and critical thinking skills in a logical, linear, evidence-based thought process that emphasizes competent, compassionate, patient-centered care in the context of clinical application.
