PMSB 9303 Podiatric Medicine Surgery Clerkship

Podiatric Medicine, Surgery and Biomechanics clerkship is a mandatory five-month clinical rotation offered at different private clinics and academic sites throughout Texas.  Students will rotate every four weeks between different clinical sites: each with a unique advantage and patient demographics.  These clerkships will provide students with a more complete clinical experience to augment skills learned during their pre-clerkship years.  Students can integrate knowledge already gained in the classroom to the clinical setting.  These series of rotations give students the opportunity to perform foot and ankle care under the supervision and guidance of a clinical faculty.  These rotations also provide the student with the opportunity to observe and practice skills required in performing a thorough lower extremity examination including a biomechanical evaluation.  Students are evaluated on their ability to obtain and present the case history, perform physical examination, properly record their findings, interpret lab and diagnostic test results, and treat/manage the patient.  Students will develop cognitive reasoning skills to identify comorbid conditions and develop treatment plans appropriate for each patient.  Students will have a unique opportunity to be exposed to and involved in wound care management, which is an essential part of podiatric medical practice. These series of rotations are also designed to expose each student to surgical procedures performed in the podiatric office, ambulatory surgical clinic, and hospital settings.
