General Tuition and Fees Information

Tuition and mandatory fees are assessed to students based on total credit hours enrolled, at a fixed rate per semester, by course and/or for specific services. Tuition and fees are subject to change by legislative or regental action and become effective on the date enacted. The Texas Legislature, except for basic tuition, does not set a specific amount for any student fee. The student fees assessed are authorized by state statute; however, the university administration and UT System Board of Regents determine specific fee amounts and makes the decision to increase fees in accordance with state law.

Tuition and mandatory fees are the academic costs required of all students for general enrollment. Included are fees charged to support the overall operation and functionality of the student union, recreation center, medical services, student services, intercollegiate athletics, and university services.

Tuition rates for undergraduate students are guaranteed not to increase for 4 years or 12 consecutive semesters, starting with the semester of initial enrollment at UTRGV. For this purpose, summer terms occurring in the same year are counted as one semester.

Each undergraduate student will be locked into a Guaranteed Tuition Plan (GTP) rate code based on the semester of initial college enrollment at UTRGV. This determination will be finalized by the official Census Date which falls on the 12th class day of Fall and Spring semesters, the 4th class day for summer sessions, and the 5th class day for accelerated online program sessions.

For graduate students, tuition and mandatory fee rates are guaranteed for four years or twelve consecutive semesters for traditional programs and two years or 6 consecutive semesters for accelerated online programs beginning upon admittance and enrollment into a graduate program.

If changes in the student record are made after the Census Date which would justify a change in the assigned GTP rate, the revised rate will be applied starting with the following semester. Charges for current and prior semesters will not be restated.

In addition, tuition and mandatory fee charges at UTRGV are capped for resident students at 12 credit hours each semester. In other words, taking 15 or 18 hours a semester (or more) will cost the same as taking 12 hours.

Charges for non-resident students are also capped at 12 credit hours except for non-resident statutory tuition rates which are required to be charged, by state statute, for each hour enrolled.

The 12-hour cap does not apply to lab and supplemental instruction fees. In addition, the cap does not apply to tuition surcharges for repeated and excessive credit hours and to accelerated online programs.
