HIST 4330 Race and Ethnicity in America

This course examines racial and ethnic formation and competition in the U.S. from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1960s, focusing on overlapping Asian American, black, white, Hispanic, and Native histories. The course addresses issues such as scientific racism, ethnic cooperation and conflict, inter-racial sexuality, labor competition, immigration policies, popular images and representations, and grassroots and organized resistance. In addition, it focuses on geography, examining distinctions between urban and rural contexts and across regions.
