Program Overview
This program leads to a profession which requires an occupational license as defined under Texas Occupations Code 58.001. This requires that all applicants seeking to become licensed must undergo a criminal background check prior to licensure. Students in this program should check with the College of Education and P-16 Integration on the requirements for a criminal background check prior to student teaching.
This degree is designed to train students for careers in the professional world of music performance or who wish to pursue a graduate degree in music.
Admission requirements for this program beyond university admission requirements.
- Students must pass an audition prior to beginning the music program.
Teacher Education Requirements:
- Admission to the Teacher Education Program at the Office of Educator Preparation and Accountability is required for completion of teacher certification requirements with the undergraduate degree. All admission requirements are in accordance to Texas Administrative Code rules §227.10 and the HEA Title II accountability requirements. All applicants must meet the current certification requirements in effect at the time of application, regardless of the catalog year of degree plan.
Progression requirements for this program.
All music courses must be passed with a minimum grade of “C.”
Prior to enrolling in the Junior Year, the following courses must be passed:
- Music Theory I-IV [MUSI 1211, MUSI 1212, MUSI 2211, & MUSI 2212]
- Sight Singing and Ear Training ET I-IV [MUSI 1116, MUSI 1117, MUSI 2116, & MUSI 2117]
- Piano Class I-III [MUSI 1114, MUSI 1115, and MUSI 2114]
- Music History I & World Music [MUSI 1308 and MUSI 1309]
- MUSI 2313 Introduction to the Music Teaching Profession.
- 4 methods courses for the major including MUSI 1183, MUSI 1166, MUSI 1167, MUSI 1178 or MUSI 1179
- Applied Instrument I-IV
- 4 semesters of Major Ensembles; 2 semesters of Secondary Ensembles
In addition, the student must pass the Sophomore Barrier. The Sophomore Barrier is the final exam taken at the end of MUAP IV. This exam must be passed in order to be considered for upper level lesson enrollment. If they do not pass the sophomore barrier, they will be required to retake lower level applied lessons. Sophomore barrier requirements will be determined by each applied area.
Teacher Education Requirements:
- Teacher Education Program progression requirements include GPA, course grades, certification courses, benchmarks/key assessments and testing.
Specific graduation requirements for this program beyond university bachelor’s degree requirements.
- A grade of “C” or better is required in all music courses. This includes MUSI, MUAP, and MUEN coursework.
- Students must successfully pass a Senior recital.
- The Senior Recital must be completed prior to enrolling in EDUC 4611.
Core Curriculum – 42 hours
The Core Curriculum serves as a broad foundation for the undergraduate degree. All candidates for a bachelor’s degree must achieve core student learning outcomes, including communication, critical thinking, empirical and quantitative skills, teamwork, personal responsibility and social responsibility, by completing courses within each category or component area of the Core Curriculum as outlined below.
The University has approved specific courses that satisfy Core Curriculum Requirements. Approved courses can be found on the Core Curriculum Page. Students seeking the most efficient way to complete the core curriculum and major or minor requirements are advised to take approved courses that can fulfill both requirements. Although core curriculum courses can also be used to fulfill major or minor requirements, earned credits hours are only applied once.
The courses listed below fulfill core curriculum and major requirements. Students who have completed a core curriculum category with courses other than those listed below will still be required to take the listed course(s) to meet major requirements.

Choose 6 hours from the following:
Applied String Electives - 14 hours
Choose 14 hours of MUAP courses of which 6 hours must be advanced
Major Ensembles - 7 hours
Complete the following 7 hours of Major Ensembles:
Secondary Ensembles - 4 hours
Choose 4 hours of secondary ensembles of which 2 hours must be advanced:
