PEDI 9514 Sub-I: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit DCC

The sub-internship in pediatric critical care medicine will be conducted in the pediatric intensive care unit of UTRGV affiliated hospitals. In this course, fourth year medical students will participate at the level of an acting intern and will be responsible for a panel of patients while under the supervision of the PICU physicians & residents. The students are expected to independently assess patients from initial admission and ongoing daily care of their patients. The student's daily activities will include presenting the patient on daily rounds with a working assessment and ongoing plan of care, following-up on patients' plans of care, ongoing reassessments, and involvement in patient/family discussions as to patient status. Teaching will occur on the bedside family centered multidisciplinary rounds and in small group discussions outside of rounds. The patients in the PICU require care from multiple disciplines and as such the medical students will have the opportunity to learn from other pediatric sub-specialists (surgical and medical), and other health care professionals. The medical students will also be expected to practice evidence based medicine and appropriately utilize the medical literature to learn and present on all aspects of their patients' care.
