PEDI 9516 Sub-Internship: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - NICU

Students will participate as members of the NICU clinical team consisting of faculty anending's, neonatal nurse practitioners, and pediatric residents. They will function as sub-interns in the care and management of hospitalized neonates in the NICU. Students will examine patients and present them to the NICU team during rounds. In addition to the learning opportunities provided by hands-on patient care, this experience will afford the student the opportunity to learn the pathophysiology and basic approaches to evaluation and management of disease states affecting neonatal patients. General medical issues of critically ill patients, delivery room management, and care of the preterm and critically ill term newborn will be addressed. The transitional state of the newborn is emphasized. Communication skills with families of a sick newborn are stressed. This rotation will involve standard day shifts and occasional night shifts. The students will be evaluated by the attending neonatologist, nurse practitioners, and residents who are familiar with the goals and objectives of the sub internship. Patient care responsibilities will be coordinated by the senior resident on the inpatient team targeting the student's goals for this rotation.
