Withdrawing from the University

BEFORE A TERM HAS STARTED

If a student has registered for classes and decides not to attend classes before the first class day, the student may withdraw prior to that first class day using ASSIST. Failure to attend does not constitute withdrawal, and students must not assume that they will “automatically” be dropped from their classes if they do not attend or do not pay. Students who do not officially complete the withdrawal process are responsible for tuition, fees and any other consequences or financial penalties resulting from failure to officially withdraw. They will also be subject to failing grades from the class instructor and may be responsible for returning financial aid to the institution. If a student has holds that limit access in ASSIST, the student can email a withdrawal request to the Office of the University Registrar before the first class day. The request must come from the student's UTRGV email address and must include the full student name, student ID number, and the term from which the student would like to be withdrawn.

AFTER A TERM HAS STARTED

A student who wishes to drop all their classes after the term has started is withdrawing from the university. To withdraw from the university, a student must complete a formal withdrawal process, which requires a mandatory Withdrawal Form, through U Central by the deadline published on the academic calendar. A student withdrawing during the first 75% of the semester or term will receive grades of W in the classes she or he was registered for in that term. After the deadline, the student will remain on the class roster and will receive the final grade calculated by the instructor. Refer to the U Central website for refund periods, which are mandated by the Texas Legislature. Grades of W do not count toward the six-course drop limit.

Students receiving any form of financial aid should contact U Central in Brownsville or Edinburg to determine the financial impacts of dropping or withdrawing from classes.

Retroactive withdrawals from the institution for a term previously completed are generally not permitted. Visit the Registrar Appeals webpage for more information.
