PAFF 6337 Public Policies in the Mexico-U.S. Border Region

The border between the United States and Mexico stretches 3,145 kilometers (1,954 miles), from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. In some places, the border is only marked by a sign or a fence. This course identifies, describes, and analyzes the transboundary convergence of Mexico-U.S. Border Region governmental institutions, their history and development in the modern era (1848-today) and examines the political dynamics and the main policy issues arising in this international border region. It analyzes the several institutions created, altered, and destroyed during this time including treaties and other bi-national agreements, programs, and policies in areas such as trade and economic development, environmental protection, food-energy-water issues, labor, migration, public health, and security. These border Institutions include NAFTA, The La Paz Agreement, The Colorado River Compact, Operation Build the Wall, etc.
