REHS 7330 Cultural Aspects in Bilingual Counseling

This course covers key historical events that have impacted the Latino/Hispanic population and important cultural factors related to working with the Latino/Hispanic population. Key topics include cultural differences, similarities, and racial diversity among the various Latino/Hispanic subpopulations, sociopolitical factors in mental health, the impact of immigration on mental health, trauma treatment, and the use of family interventions. Roles in, barriers to, and approaches for engaging in culturally competent counseling are discussed throughout the course, and students have the opportunity to explore their own cultural identification and heritage. The course is taught in English and in Spanish.
