SURG 9513 Cardiac Anesthesia

The goal of the Cardiac Anesthesia Elective (cardiovascular/thoracic rotation) is to provide the medical student with a foundation of skills, knowledge, and clinical experience requisite to participate in the care of this population of patients. During this rotation, medical students will rotate through one-month (4 weeks) of cardiovascular/thoracic anesthesia cases with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) (including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on/off pump procedures, valve replacements, video-assisted thorascopic surgeries, etc.). Working with the faculty members of the care team, the desired primary outcome is for the medical students to gain competence in preoperative assessment, anesthetic plan development, and perioperative management of these patients specific to this particular subspecialty of the Anesthesiology. 

Prerequisite: Successful completion of SOM Clerkship Y3 of curriculum.
