SOCW 4303 Social Work with Families

This course will focus on working with families implementing the generalist intervention model using mainly ecological and strengths-based perspectives. Students will focus on the intricacies of working with families and focusing on engaging and assessing different family structures. Students will learn to examine principles and frameworks for social justice practice and develop strategies to empower families. Students will reflect on their own lived experiences and identify how they may affect their ability to work with families, paying special attention to cultural differences and how they may facilitate or inhibit their work with families. Students will gain knowledge of familial patterns as well as communication skills to help empower individuals within the family, building strong and resilient families. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks, case vignettes, videos, social media, role-play, and hands-on experiential applications, students will be able to learn about and practice eclectic strategies and interventions with the families they work alongside.
