PHYS 8393 Advanced General Relativity and Gravitation

This is an advanced graduate course in Einstein’s theory of relativity and other topics in the field of gravitation. Topics covered are:

1.     Symmetries of Riemann spaces, Lie groups classifications. Spatially homogeneous Bianchi-type spacetimes. Petrov classification.

2.     Spinors. Newman-Penrose formalism. Singularities theorems in General Relativity.

3.     Golden Sachs theorem and eikonal approximation. Gravitational lenses.

4.     Cosmological solutions of general relativity and observational cosmology.

5.     Approaches to a quantum theory of gravity: loop quantum representation, entropic gravity, causal dynamic representation, superstring theory.
