MSEN 8309 Advanced Laser Material Processing

The course will focus on laser technology and various laser-based manufacturing and materials processing techniques. Laser and lasing mechanism, laser optics and beam qualities, fundamentals of laser/materials interaction, laser machining, laser welding, and laser surface treatment are some of the topics included in this course. Multi-physics phenomena produced by the laser-matter interaction are also studied (heat/mass transfer, fluid/solid mechanics, phase/microstructure change, etc). The students will have the opportunity to use different analytical and numerical models to study the physics in material processing techniques.
