SOCW 3363 Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation Techniques
This course equips students with essential skills in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques, focusing on effective responses to clients in acute distress or crisis situations. Students will learn trauma-informed approaches to engage both voluntary and involuntary clients, particularly those exhibiting symptoms or behaviors that often are interpreted as resistance, defensiveness or avoidance. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the impact of trauma, grief, and cultural factors in shaping clients' behaviors and responses. Through case studies, role-plays, and practical exercises, students will develop strategies for assessing risk, managing crisis situations, conducting suicide assessments, and engaging in planning with the client. The course will also address the balance between supporting clients and navigating ethical concerns related to monitoring and ableism in social work practice.
