HIST 3311 History of the American Family and Childhood

This course offers a synthesis of American history with a focus on the evolving role of the family and the transitional stages of childhood. It examines immigration, family economy and consumption, and the development of social welfare systems in response to family and childhood needs. Major life events- such as birth, death, marriage, and divorce- are analyzed within their historical contexts. The course may also include opportunities for students to explore their own family histories and compare them to broader historical trends.
