SOCW 6322 Practice with Groups and Communities

This course will prepare students to create a sense of belonging, promote intercultural communication, create a validating environment, and assess the readiness for discussions of oppression and readiness for treatment groups. Students will explore the principles and practices of social and racial justice within the context of group and community work in social work. Emphasizing empowerment and advocacy, students will learn to engage with diverse populations, address systemic inequalities, and facilitate group and community-based initiatives. The course covers theoretical frameworks, stages of group process, assessment strategies, and intervention techniques relevant to group dynamics and community development. Through case studies, live practice, and collaboration with community organizations, students will develop the skills necessary to provide group interventions through direct and indirect practice, fostering inclusive environments that support collective action.
