SOCW 6364 Interdisciplinary Social Work Practice

This course explores the principles, theories, and practical applications of interdisciplinary social work practice, with a focus on gerontology, mental health, and medical social work. Students will examine how social workers collaborate with professionals from various disciplines to provide comprehensive care and address complex issues affecting diverse populations. This course emphasizes the importance of effective teamwork, communication, and coordination across disciplines to address the diverse needs of individuals, families, and communities. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration focused on collaborative decision-making with providers from different disciplines, including healthcare, education, law enforcement, mental health, community organizations, and others, to provide holistic services. Students will learn about integrative healthcare and the benefits of this model when assisting clients. Through case studies, role-plays, and group exercises, students will develop practical skills in navigating interdisciplinary relationships, facilitating communication, and advocating for clients within multi-professional teams. Students will also explore the ethical considerations and challenges that arise when working in interdisciplinary settings, with a focus on maintaining the social work values of respect, empowerment, and social justice. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to work effectively in a variety of interdisciplinary settings and contribute to more coordinated, effective, and equitable service delivery.
