SOCW 6396 Social Work with Older Adults

Students will explore the aging process from a social justice perspective, analyzing how systemic racism, historical inequities, and cultural biases influence the lived experiences of older adults. The course will also provide frameworks for understanding cultural humility and how to integrate anti-racist and anti-ageism practices into assessment, intervention, and advocacy in the context of aging. Specific attention will be given to the needs of marginalized older adult populations, such as Black, Indigenous, Latine, and people of color (BIPOC), LGBTQ+ older adults, and older adults with disabilities. Students will explore the physical, emotional, social, and financial aspects of aging, with an emphasis on promoting well-being, dignity, and independence for older individuals. Students will learn to assess and address the needs of older clients in various settings, including homes, nursing facilities, and community organizations. Students will gain skills in case management, providing resources, and facilitating connections with services that improve the quality of life for older adults.
