SOCW 6370 Generalist Field Education I

This course is the first part of a two-semester class required of all MSW students completing their generalist year field internship. This practicum course requires completion of 400 clock hours in an approved practicum setting, which prepares student interns for generalist social work practice through the application of social work values and ethics skills with individuals, groups, families, organizations and communities. The course combines guided discussion, personal reflection, and peer feedback as a means for students to integrate social work theory, practice, social welfare policy, human behavior in the social environment, and research in real world experiences. This course begins the student’s journey to becoming a professional social worker by developing competencies through the use of reflection and feedback. The students will be able to utilize theoretical concepts and empirically based approaches during their practicum. The students are expected to put into practice the techniques and interventions learned in their courses such case management duties, referrals, assessments, and advocacy. The student interns will be able to identify ethical issues and dilemmas associated with anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion (ADEI) with the delivery of services and programs to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
