This course explores the application of anti-oppressive frameworks and trauma-focused approaches in social work practice with children and families. It focuses on understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable individuals who have experienced a traumatic event, while emphasizing empowerment, resilience, and cultural responsiveness. Students will develop skills in evidence-based, trauma-sensitive interventions, and in supporting children and families in navigating social systems like child welfare, education, immigration, and healthcare. The course covers trauma theory and the understanding of trauma from a biopsychosocial framework, and how trauma manifests in behaviors, relationships, and mental health. A critical focus will be placed on cultural humility, understanding the diverse needs of families from different backgrounds, and promoting an environment of safety, trust, and collaboration.
